Matthew's Gospel includes 5 discourses, or sermons, where Jesus addressed how God views people, discipleship, the truth of the Kingdom of Heaven, His Divine authority, the correct view of the Law, how to live by living in humility, His judgement and the end of the age. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 contain the first of these sermons, the Sermon on the Mount. 

Here, Matthew records Jesus's amazing message of the radical truths of the Kingdom of Heaven, His authority in this Kingdom, God's view of people and righteousness, and the relationships with God and the People of God He expects. Jesus's message was so radical that people recognized Jesus had taught with an authority greater than their scribes. How does that authority apply to the way we live as people who are identified with Christ?

Over these six weeks we will be examining the text to answer some big questions that every Christians must answer: How do I care for and show mercy to others? What does God's law require of me? What does God's will on earth look like and how do I pursue it? How does my identity in Christ change how I view my everyday pursuits? What would it be like to treat others as I would want to be treated? What are our responsibilities once we've begun building our house on the rock?
